As part of the American Youth Leadership Program (AYLP), North Carolina will send 4 youth and 1 adult mentor to Washington, DC then Paraguay from July 16-August 13, 2013. Participants were selected from Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, North Carolina, Texas, and the Washington, DC metro area.
The total group consists of 18 youth and 3 adult mentors from across the country and will convene in Washington, DC for a week before travelling to Paraguay for three weeks. Through the AYLP, Partners of the Americas aims to strengthen mutual understanding, awareness, and cooperation between the people of the United States and Paraguay. By promoting and developing interaction between these two countries, youth realize their potential to promote positive changes in thier communities now and in the future.
Youth and mentor participants will spend three weeks abroad engaging with local government and civic organizations, building relationships with host families and other youth, visiting schools and participating in skills-based workshops that enable and empower them to mobilize their communities towards positive change. Upon returning to the U.S., youth use what they learned throughout the exchange to design and implement service projects that benefit their communities.
The AYLP Participants were selected in an open competition of youth between 15-17 years old who have outstanding school records, display leadership qualities and have demonstrated interests in improving their local community. The AYLP is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and implemented by Partners of the Americas.
